What is agentic commerce? A field guide for e-commerce developers

Agentic commerce is shopping done by AI agents on a person's behalf. Instead of a human browsing a storefront, an assistant like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini searches, compares stores, verifies stock, delivery and return terms, and completes the purchase. For developers this is the shift from visual search to agentic data search: the storefront you have spent a career perfecting becomes a data source, and the visitor deciding whether to buy is increasingly a piece of software. This guide covers how agents read a store, why most stores are invisible to them, and where the new billable work lives.

Protocols

ACP, AP2 and MCP, explained simply

Three open standards now define agentic commerce, and every e-commerce developer should be able to name them. The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) from OpenAI and Stripe governs how an agent completes a purchase (it powers checkout inside ChatGPT). The Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) from Google and 60+ payment networks governs trusted, authorised machine-initiated payments. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) from Anthropic governs how an agent reaches and reads your store's data and tools. We map each to what it asks of your store, in plain English, with no standards-body jargon.

What is UCP? Google and Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol, explained

UCP is the Universal Commerce Protocol, the open standard co-developed by Google and Shopify and launched at NRF in January 2026. It is how an AI agent discovers what your store can do and completes a purchase. This post explains the /.well-known/ucp manifest, the capabilities, schema versions and signing keys it declares, how UCP relates to ACP, AP2 and MCP, and how Goofre™ measures your store's conformance to it.

The ACO™ is e-commerce's Forward Deployed Engineer

In modern software, the Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is the highest-leverage role: a technical person embedded with a customer to make powerful technology actually work in their environment. The Agentic Commerce Orchestrator™ (ACO™) is that role for e-commerce. As platforms automate the old billable work (theme tweaks, feed fixes, basic SEO), the developers who move up the stack (owning a store's readiness for AI agents) become indispensable. This post makes the case for ACO™ as a career, and how the FDE playbook maps onto agentic commerce work.

Market data

Agentic commerce by the numbers (2026)

The trend is not hypothetical. AI-driven referral traffic to retail sites has grown by triple-digit percentages year over year, AI-referred shoppers convert at materially higher rates, and AI assistants already recommend specific products and complete purchases. This post pulls the real, sourced numbers on agentic commerce adoption, AI shopping traffic, conversion and spend, and reads the trend line for what it means for merchants and the developers who serve them. Data first, hype second.

Magento

Is your Magento store invisible to AI shoppers?

Goofre™ is focused on Magento first, and Magento stores have specific, recurring gaps. An AI agent reads product markup, feeds, identity signals, policy pages and the checkout path before it will buy, and one wrong value can make a store look fine to a human and fail silently for an agent. This practical guide walks the Magento AI readiness checklist an agent cares about (structured data, Merchant Center feeds, verified identity, quotable return and shipping terms, an agent-drivable checkout) and the fixes most stores miss.
